As I write this article Thursday morning, I am hoping to haul some manure over the weekend. I still like to be humbled when I am behind a pitch fork, it puts me in my place, but every year it gets a little harder. I also have time to think and reflect, especially this time of the year. I am a year older, Christmas is here, and I think more about what is important in life. As we go through the next couple weeks, I hope each of you have a chance to spend time with family, remember those that can’t be with us, reflect on our many blessings, and have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season.

There have been a lot of birds around the farm lately. I am especially interested when those groups of hundreds fly around and roost around the farm. I am guessing they are sparrows. We actually still have a lot of fruit from the shrubs around the farm for the birds to eat, but they may soon be gone. So the next few months can be tough on birds, especially if there is plenty of snow on the ground for a period of time. Birds will return to the spot where they are accustomed to finding food. If the feeder is empty for as little as one day, many birds may perish during the night if no food is found elsewhere. This is especially true during periods of very harsh weather. So, if you have bird feeders out, keep plenty of feed in them.
