The Joys of Mowing Pastures

Jordan, the youngest son, went out Saturday morning to mow hay with the good tractor and I had nothing to do, so I hooked the rotary mower up to the 53-year-old tractor and went out to mow a steep, rough pasture. Forty years ago, I enjoyed mowing pastures but as I get older, it is not as fun. When it is in the 90s and you are sweating and the sweat bees bite you, it is not fun nor is it a good experience when an insect flies in your ear that you can’t get out and moves around. Then there are the trees. When you mow under one, stinging hair caterpillars fall down and crawl under your shirt and give you stinging welts. Then there is my favorite, when a branch smacks you in the face and your glasses fly off and then I am “blind as a bat” trying to find them hoping I didn’t run over them. The good news is when I finished, it did look nice, but the pasture was brown due to the dry weather.
