The Transition

Each year over Mother’s Day weekend, we take our family vacation to Central Missouri. When we go, it is spring, when we get back, it is summer. I cherished this one as it may be the last time we get to do this as a family. The oldest son came up from Arkansas for a few days, and the youngest one just finished his first year at Wilmington College and is now back there for the summer. I have made this trip for almost 40 years, and I cannot remember so few crops planted as this year. Once we got past Columbus, I only saw one field planted until we got to almost Columbia, Missouri, and the crop had not emerged. On the way home, I expected to see more crops in the ground as we took the southerly route on interstate 64 from St. Louis, through Louisville and on to Huntington. I did not see a single field planted, except around Evansville. The first crop I saw growing was along the Ohio River before Gallipolis, last Thursday. Flooding was significant along the Mississippi River, and it was eerie not to see any barges on the river. The wet weather and the lack of barges to move grain and fertilizer is really taking its toll on farmers.
