The scientific benefits of giving thanks (or gratitude)

This week is Thanks­giving because our forefathers recognized “it is meet and right” to give God thanks and praise, as the ancient prayer says. But science has finally caught up with the Bible in discovering that, aside from being a fit way to respond to divine blessings, thanksgiving provides a host of physical and psychological benefits. Here are a few:

1. Lower levels of stress and depression. “Gratitude seems … to protect people from stress and depression which has implications for clinical interventions,” wrote British researcher Alex Wood in the Journal of Research in Personality. Others found that grateful people have 23 percent lower stress hormones and eat 25 percent less fat – which could come in handy during the holiday season.
