Firefighters Appreciation Month offers a time to celebrate and show respect to local heroes. Too often, these heroes and their stories are overlooked. However, getting to know the men and women who risk their lives for their communities is a great way to further show support and appreciation. The Blackburn family is just one example of those who serve the Morgan County area and beyond. Stories lie behind the masks and fire suits.

For the Blackburns, firefighting is a family tradition. Brothers Drew and Dean, along with Dean’s children Zach and Ashley, are all involved in their local fire departments. Dean, Zach and Ashley volunteer in Pennsville while Drew has been an active member of the Malta-McConnelsville (M-M) Fire Department for over 20 years. The four of them have served a total of 80 years at various fire departments in the area. This firefighting frenzy began with Drew and Dean’s grandfather, Edison, who served at the old McConnelsville Fire Department in the 1940s.
