The Malconta American Legion Post No. 24 will hold its annual flag disposal ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the Wharf Lot in McConnelsville. This ceremony is conducted annually to properly dispose of flags that are no longer serviceable. The public is invited to come out and witness this dignified ceremony where the flags of our nation are honorably retired.

The calendar will tell you that the U.S. celebrates Flag Day on June 14, but many people do not know why. On that day in 1777, John Adams, who later became America’s second president, introduced a resolution in Congress that stated, in part, “the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
