The Fourth of July is typically celebrated every year to take pride in American’s Freedom with barbecues, family gatherings and fireworks. Independence Day has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of celebrations is dated back to the American Revolution in the 18th century. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Independence and two days later, Thomas Jefferson’s historical documents were adopted.

Although this year’s celebrations may feel a little different because of COVID-19 guidelines, we are provided with a unique situation to gain perspective with Morgan County’s honor to the American Dream. Roughly three miles from McConnelsville, Ohio, sits the village water tower that used to read, “McConnelsville HOME OF THE HAWK BATTALION.” McConnelsville has proven to show a long-term tradition of patriotism. Since the town was founded, we have sent many of our sons and daughters to defend the democracy in foreign lands. Monuments throughout McConnelsville symbolize each U.S. war, reminding us that freedom doesn’t come free. The soldiers who once lived within our boundaries are not forgotten, nor do we forget the soldiers that train today.
