The VFW established the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest in 1947. Each year, nearly 40,000, 9th through 12th grade students enter to win a share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships. The National winner will receive $30,000. It is paid directly to the recipient’s American college, university, or vocational/technical school. Last year’s winner, Christine Troll, is a home-schooled senior from Somerset, PA.

More than 132,000 students, grades 6th to 8th, enter the Patriot's Pen essay contest. The National winner is awarded $5,000 and a trip for themselves and parents to Washington, D.C.
