David H. Ross, 96, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Columbus.

Preceded in death by wife of 72 years, Goldie, who passed away on September 18, 2020; parents, John and Francis Ross; brothers, George and Phil; sisters, Elizabeth, Lyra, and Judith; and daughter-in law, Tina Ross.

He was born in Malta, Ohio, on July 19, 1924, and graduated from M-M High School where he played baritone in the band and was a member of the football team. After graduation, he was a surveyor for Morgan County mapping out many of the county and township roads that are still in use today.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II. After a brief stint in the Army Air Corp, he was assigned to a Forward Reconnaissance unit in Europe and was one of the first American soldiers through the gates of Dachau.

After the war, he enrolled at The Ohio State University where he earned a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1951. He worked for the Standard Ohio Company of Indiana for a year, then for over 30 years at North American Aviation/Rockwell International as a Mechanical Engineer in the Aerospace Industry.

He was a lifelong musician, switching from baritone to French horn and studying at Capital University. He was a charter member and founder of the North American Aviation Concert Band, now known as the Westerville Community Band.

He is survived by sons, John (Deborah) and Daniel Ross; grandchildren, Jane and David Ross; and sister, Edith Wilson.

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at McConnelsville Cemetery, with Galen Finley officiating. Military rites will be held by the American Legion Post No. 24 Honor Guard.
