Cancelation of OHSAA’s winter sports tournaments ends FFHS Lady Cadets’ season prematurely

For Ohio’s winter high school teams and athletes that were still participating in the postseason, their year came to a premature end on March 26. The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that the winter sports tournaments of wrestling, basketball and ice hockey, which were postponed indefinitely, are now canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lady Cadet state semifinal postponed

Students were beginning to file into the high school gym for a “send-off” of the Fort Frye Lady Cadet basketball team. The Lady Cadet squad was just a couple of hours away from boarding a bus for their Division IV State Semifinal contest at 8 p.m. that night (March 12) with Minister, at St. John Arena in Columbus, when the word came from the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Schools’ spring sports season on hold

Governor Mike DeWine’s recent order mandating schools in Ohio be closed, through at least April 3 to combat the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, has also postponed the start of the spring sports season.

An off shooting night doomed the Morgan Raiders basketball team’s magical tournament run. The Raiders fell to the Ridgewood Generals 65-48 in the Division III District Finals at Muskingum University.

At 12:45 p.m. Thursday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that all remaining winter tournament contests are immediately postponed due to the growing situation with the coronavirus COVID-19.

Team effort sends Lady Cadets to Division IV State Final Four

It was hugs and tears of joy all around for the Fort Frye Lady Cadets as they celebrated winning the Division IV Regional title at Pickerington North High School Saturday night. In a three day period, the unranked Lady Cadets had disposed of two of the top four teams in the final Division IV Associated Press state basketball poll to advance to their first “Final Four” since 2013. The Fort Frye squad eliminated fourth-ranked Sugar Grove Berne Union 37-28 in the semifinals last Thursday, and fourth-ranked Portsmouth Notre Dame 49-31 to advance to the state semifinals at St. John Arena, Columbus, on Thursday night.

It took 12 minutes of heart-pounding bonus basketball, but the Morgan Raider basketball team hit the big shots when they needed them most to claim a 49-46 triple-overtime sectional championship victory at Belmont Union Local. Offenberger earns 100th career win

Haden Offenberger earned his 100th career high school win on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when Waterford hosted Fort Frye for its annual Student Body dual wrestling match. Offenberger pinned Fort Frye’s Joe Duskey in 11 seconds in the 160-pound weight class. A junior at Waterford High School, Haden is currently ranked 20th at 160 pounds in Ohio Division III. Also at the dual, Fort Frye’s Thomas Lenhart beat Waterford’s Quentin Doak in the 220-pound weight class. Waterford won the dual. Waterford will wrestle at the Tri-Valley Conference tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Perseverance paid off for the Morgan Lady Raider basketball team when they hosted Philo, last Wednesday. After struggling for most of the game, Morgan outscored the Lady Electrics 13-3 in the final quarter for a 41-32 Muskingum Valley League victory.
